Purpose of the Test

Broncho Alveolar Lavage (BAL) for Fungus C/S (culture and sensitivity) with Fungus Stain (KOH) is a laboratory test that is used to detect the presence of fungi in the lung fluid, which is collected by washing the bronchoalveolar space (small air sacs) of the lungs. The culture and sensitivity test helps identify the type of fungus present and determine which antifungal medications may be effective in treating the infection. The Fungus Stain (KOH) test is a rapid diagnostic test that helps detect fungal elements in the sample.

When this test is required

The BAL for Fungus C/S with Fungus Stain (KOH) is requested when a healthcare provider suspects that a patient may have a fungal respiratory infection, which can cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fever. Fungal respiratory infections can occur in people with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, or diabetes, as well as in people who have inhaled contaminated fungal spores in the environment.

What the Test Detects

The culture and sensitivity test helps identify the type of fungus present and determine which antifungal medications may be effective in treating the infection. The Fungus Stain (KOH) test is a rapid diagnostic test that helps detect fungal elements in the sample.

Preparation for the Test

Before the BAL procedure, the patient may be asked to fast for several hours to prevent vomiting and aspirating (inhaling) any food or liquid during the procedure. The patient may also be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners or aspirin, for a period of time before the procedure. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they may affect the test results. After the procedure, the patient may need to rest and refrain from eating or drinking until the effects of the anesthesia wear off.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a sample of lung fluid, which is collected by performing a bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) procedure. During the procedure, a flexible tube (bronchoscope) is passed through the patient’s mouth or nose and into the lungs. Saline solution is then injected into the lungs and then suctioned out to collect a sample of the lung fluid.

Additional Notes

The BAL procedure is a safe and effective way to collect a sample of lung fluid for testing. However, it does carry some risks, including bleeding, infection, and lung collapse. It is important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions before and after the procedure to minimize the risks and ensure the best possible outcome. It is also important to inform your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they may affect the test results.
