Purpose of the Test

A brain DWI may be ordered to evaluate the brain tissue and diagnose conditions that affect the brain’s function and blood flow, such as a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or brain tumor.

When this test is required

A brain DWI may be requested if a patient presents with symptoms such as sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, severe headache, or confusion, which may be caused by a problem with the brain tissue or blood flow. It may also be ordered if a patient has a history of conditions that affect the brain, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury.

What the Test Detects

Brain DWI is a medical imaging test that creates images of the brain that show changes in the diffusion of water molecules in the brain tissue. This test is used to detect areas of the brain that may have suffered damage or injury, which may indicate the presence of a stroke, tumor, or other conditions that affect brain function.

Preparation for the Test

Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medical conditions, allergies, or implanted devices that may interfere with the test. They should also remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or clothing with metal zippers or buttons, and change into a hospital gown before the test. Patients should follow any instructions provided by their healthcare provider regarding fasting or other preparation for the test. Depending on the type of contrast material used, patients may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the test. It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you have any kidney disease, as some types of contrast material can affect kidney function.

Sample Requirements

No samples are required for a brain DWI.

Additional Notes

Brain DWI is a safe and non-invasive test that does not involve radiation. However, patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medical conditions, allergies, or implanted devices that may interfere with the test. They should also remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or clothing with metal zippers or buttons, and change into a hospital gown before the test. Patients should follow any instructions provided by their healthcare provider regarding fasting or other preparation for the test. Brain DWI is usually performed along with other brain imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, to provide a complete evaluation of the brain.
