Purpose of the Test

Bone marrow slide and block review with history is done to evaluate the cells present in the bone marrow for any abnormalities or diseases. The test helps in the diagnosis and management of various blood disorders and cancers.

When this test is required

The test is usually ordered by a hematologist or an oncologist when a patient has signs and symptoms of a blood disorder or cancer such as anemia, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, fever, bone pain, abnormal blood counts, or unexplained bleeding or bruising.

What the Test Detects

The test evaluates the cells present in the bone marrow for any abnormalities or diseases. The evaluation includes examination of the size, shape, and other characteristics of the cells.

Preparation for the Test

The patient will be advised to avoid blood-thinning medications before the test. The patient may be given a sedative before the procedure to minimize discomfort.

Sample Requirements

A bone marrow biopsy is performed to obtain a sample of bone marrow. The sample is then processed and slides and blocks are prepared for examination under a microscope.

Additional Notes

Bone marrow biopsy is an invasive procedure that involves inserting a needle into the bone marrow to obtain a sample. The procedure may cause discomfort and pain, and the patient may experience some bleeding and bruising at the site of the biopsy. The patient should follow the instructions given by the healthcare provider before and after the procedure to minimize complications.
