Purpose of the Test

A blood bone profile is a group of tests that evaluates the health of bones, kidneys, and calcium metabolism.

When this test is required

A healthcare provider may order a bone profile if an individual has symptoms of bone or kidney disease, such as bone pain or tenderness, frequent fractures, or high blood pressure. The test may also be ordered if an individual has risk factors for bone loss, such as postmenopausal women or individuals with a family history of osteoporosis.

What the Test Detects

A bone profile typically includes tests for calcium, phosphate, and alkaline phosphatase levels in the blood, as well as tests for vitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is required, but individuals should inform their healthcare provider of any medications they are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for this test, usually taken from a vein in the arm using a small needle.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that while a bone profile can provide important information about bone health and kidney function, it is just one tool that healthcare providers use to make a diagnosis. Individuals should discuss their test results with their healthcare provider and ask any questions they may have about their bone health and overall health
