Purpose of the Test

BK polyomavirus (BKV) is a virus that commonly infects humans without causing any symptoms. However, in people with weakened immune systems, such as transplant recipients, the virus can become active and cause serious infections, including nephropathy (kidney disease) and cystitis (bladder inflammation). The BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test is ordered to monitor the levels of the virus in the blood of transplant patients and to help diagnose and manage BKV-associated nephropathy.

When this test is required

The BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test is usually requested by a transplant physician or nephrologist when a patient shows signs of kidney or bladder problems or as a routine monitoring test for patients at risk of developing BKV-associated nephropathy.

What the Test Detects

The BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test measures the amount of BK virus in the blood. The test uses a technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect and quantify the viral DNA.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation required for the BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test.

Sample Requirements

A blood sample is required for the BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test.

Additional Notes

The BK polyomavirus (quantitative) test is not recommended for diagnosing BKV-associated nephropathy on its own. It is usually ordered along with other tests, such as a kidney biopsy or a urine test, to confirm the diagnosis. The test may also be affected by antiviral medications that the patient is taking, so it is important to inform the healthcare provider about any medications the patient is currently taking.
