Purpose of the Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) Test

A Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) is ordered to evaluate the general status of a patient’s electrolyte and acid-base balance, kidney function, and blood sugar level. It is typically ordered as part of a routine health checkup or to monitor people with certain chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or kidney disease.

When this Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) test is required

A BMP is typically ordered as part of a routine health checkup or if someone has symptoms suggestive of electrolyte imbalances, acid-base imbalances, or kidney dysfunction

What the Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) Test Detects

A BMP typically includes the following tests: 1) Glucose: measures the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. 2) Sodium: measures the amount of sodium in the blood.3 ) Potassium: measures the amount of potassium in the blood. 4) Chloride: measures the amount of chloride in the blood.5) Carbon dioxide (CO2): measures the amount of CO2 in the blood.6) BUN (blood urea nitrogen): measures the amount of nitrogen in the blood that comes from the waste product urea.7) Creatinine: measures the level of creatinine in the blood, which reflects kidney function.

Preparation for the Basic Metabolic Profile (BMP) Test

Typically, no preparation is needed for a BMP. However, your doctor may ask you to fast for a certain period before the test, especially if you are also having other blood tests that require fasting.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample that is drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

Some medications, such as diuretics, can affect the results of a BMP, so it is important to inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking. Additionally, certain conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating can also affect the test results.
