Purpose of the Test

A basic cardiac MRI may be ordered by a healthcare provider to investigate various heart conditions such as:Congenital heart diseaseCoronary artery diseaseHeart valve disordersCardiomyopathyHeart tumors

When this test is required

MRI of the heart is generally considered a safe and non-invasive test. However, patients with certain metallic implants, such as pacemakers, may not be able to undergo the MRI exam. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any medical conditions or medications they are taking before undergoing the MRI exam. The patient may experience some discomfort during the MRI exam due to the need to lie still for an extended period.

What the Test Detects

A basic cardiac MRI is used to help diagnose various heart conditions such as congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, heart valve disorders, cardiomyopathy, and heart tumors. It can also be used to monitor the progression of a disease or the effectiveness of a treatment. The detailed images produced by the MRI exam help healthcare providers make more accurate diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment plans.

Preparation for the Test

Before the test, the patient may be asked to fast for several hours to ensure that there is no food in the stomach that can interfere with the imaging results. Patients should also inform the healthcare provider if they have any metal implants or pacemakers, as they may be contraindicated for the MRI exam. The patient may be asked to wear a gown and lie on a table that slides into the MRI machine.

Sample Requirements
