Purpose of the Test

The anti-Scl-70 test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor the progression of systemic scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease that affects the skin and internal organs, such as the lungs, kidneys, and heart. Anti-Scl-70 antibodies are present in about 15-30% of people with systemic scleroderma and are associated with a more severe form of the disease.

When this test is required

The anti-Scl-70 test may be requested when a person has signs and symptoms of systemic scleroderma, such as skin thickening and hardening, Raynaud’s phenomenon, joint pain and stiffness, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. The test may also be ordered to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and to detect disease recurrence.

What the Test Detects

The anti-Scl-70 test measures the levels of antibodies that target the Scl-70 protein, which is involved in DNA replication and repair.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is needed for the anti-Scl-70 test.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, which is usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

The anti-Scl-70 test is just one of several tests that may be used to diagnose systemic scleroderma, and a combination of clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and imaging studies may be needed to make a definitive diagnosis. Treatment options for systemic scleroderma depend on the severity and type of the disease and may include medication, physical therapy, and surgery.
