Purpose of the Test

The Anti-HEV IgM test is used to diagnose an acute Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection, which is a type of viral hepatitis that can cause inflammation and damage to the liver.

When this test is required

The test is typically ordered when someone has symptoms of a liver disease, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and jaundice, and has been exposed to the HEV through contaminated food or water.

What the Test Detects

The Anti-HEV IgM test detects the presence of Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to the HEV in the blood, which are produced in response to an acute HEV infection.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is required, but you should inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any medications that may affect the results.

Sample Requirements

The test requires a blood sample, usually drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

There is currently no specific treatment for HEV infection, and the infection typically resolves on its own within a few weeks to months. However, people with severe or chronic HEV infections may require supportive care, such as hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and antiviral medications. To prevent HEV infection, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands frequently and thoroughly, avoiding eating raw or undercooked meat and shellfish, and drinking safe water.
