Purpose of the Test

The AFB C/S test is ordered when a person has symptoms of TB, such as persistent cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue. The test is also ordered if a person has been in contact with someone who has TB or has a history of travel to an area with a high incidence of TB.

When this test is required

The AFB C/S test is requested when a person is suspected of having TB infection, typically when other diagnostic tests are inconclusive or when a person has a higher risk of contracting the disease. Symptoms of TB may include persistent cough, fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue.

What the Test Detects

The AFB C/S (Acid-Fast Bacilli Culture and Sensitivity) test is used to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a tissue biopsy sample. This bacteria causes tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease that primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body.

Preparation for the Test

There is no specific test preparation required for the AFB C/S test. However, your healthcare provider may ask you to stop taking certain medications that could interfere with the test results. It is essential to inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, before the test.

Sample Requirements

To perform the AFB C/S test, a tissue biopsy sample is required. This sample is usually taken from the lungs, lymph nodes, or other affected organs.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that the AFB C/S test is a complex and time-consuming test, and results may take several weeks to become available. Additionally, the test may have false-negative results, meaning that a person may have TB infection, but the test does not detect it. In some cases, repeat testing may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. If you suspect that you have TB, you should seek medical attention immediately to get proper diagnosis and treatment.
