Purpose of the Test

An AFB C/S test is performed to diagnose tuberculosis (TB), a contagious bacterial infection that typically affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body such as the brain, spine, or kidneys. The test is used to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a sputum sample, which is important for confirming a diagnosis of TB and determining the most appropriate treatment plan. It may also be used to monitor treatment progress and to detect antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacteria.

What the Test Detects

An AFB C/S (acid-fast bacilli culture and sensitivity) test is a laboratory test that looks for the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB), in a sputum sample.

Preparation for the Test

There may be specific instructions to follow before collecting the sputum sample, such as avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking for a certain period of time before the test.

Sample Requirements

A sputum sample is collected by coughing up mucus from the lungs into a sterile container.

Additional Notes

It can take several weeks for the bacteria to grow in the laboratory and for the results of the test to become available. If someone has symptoms of TB, they should see a healthcare provider and take precautions to prevent the spread of the infection.
