Purpose of the Test

The AFB C/S (Acid-fast bacilli culture and sensitivity) test on an ear swab is used to detect and identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB), in the ear.

When this test is required

The AFB C/S test is used to diagnose active TB infection in patients who present with symptoms such as cough, fever, weight loss, and night sweats. It may also be used to monitor treatment progress in patients with active TB or to screen individuals who have been exposed to TB but are not showing symptoms.

What the Test Detects

AFB C/S refers to Acid-Fast Bacilli Culture and Sensitivity. It is a laboratory test that is performed to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB), in a patient’s ear swab sample.

Preparation for the Test

No specific test preparation is needed for the AFB C/S test on an ear swab. However, it is important to inform the healthcare provider about any medications the patient is taking, including antibiotics, as these may affect the accuracy of the test results. The provider may advise the patient to stop taking certain medications before the test or to wait until after the test to resume taking them.

Sample Requirements

A sample of ear discharge or pus is required for the AFB C/S test on an ear swab. The sample is collected by inserting a sterile swab into the ear canal and gently rotating it to collect the discharge or pus.
