Purpose of the Test

The AFB C/S (Acid-fast Bacilli Culture and Sensitivity) test on a Drain Tip sample is performed to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis, and to determine which antibiotics can effectively treat the infection.

When this test is required

The AFB C/S test is requested when a patient has symptoms suggestive of TB, such as a persistent cough, fever, weight loss, and night sweats. It may also be ordered if a patient has been exposed to someone with active TB or if they have a positive TB skin test or interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) test.

What the Test Detects

The AFB C/S (Acid-fast bacilli culture and sensitivity) test is used to detect and identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). It is a laboratory test that is conducted on a sample of sputum (phlegm coughed up from the lungs), bronchial washings, or other bodily fluids or tissues.

Preparation for the Test

No special preparation is typically required for this test, although the healthcare provider may give specific instructions on how to collect the sample.

Sample Requirements

A Drain Tip sample is a fluid or material collected from a drain that has been placed to help drain an infection or fluid collection in the body. The sample is typically collected using a sterile collection container or syringe.

Additional Notes

It is important to note that while the AFB C/S test is a valuable tool for diagnosing TB, it is not always accurate. False-negative results may occur if the sample is not collected properly, if the bacterium is present in low numbers, or if the bacterium is not viable. False-positive results may occur if the sample is contaminated or if other acid-fast bacteria are present. Therefore, the AFB C/S test should be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluation to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
