What is the ECG Test?

ECG is an Electrocardiogram test whose purpose is to record the electrical signals in the heart. It is not painless at all. It can detect many diseases, including heart problems.. The Electrocardiogram or ECG is also known as EKG. It can be done in hospitals, clinics, and even in ambulances. 

The following are the Types of ECG.

• A heart monitoring device
• Holter monitor

When is an ECG performed?

An ECG test is performed in the following conditions;

• Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmia)
• Coronary artery disease, causing chest pain
• Blockage or narrowing of arteries
• In case of a heart attack & heart disease history
• Ongoing heart treatment

And in case of the following signs and symptoms.

• Lightheadedness, dizziness, or confusion
• Heart palpitations
• Chest pain
• Rapid pulse
• Shortness of breath
• Weakness, fatigue, or a decline in the ability to exercise

What does an ECG detect?

An ECG can detect:

• A heart rate by checking the pulse
• If the heart rhythm is normal or not, it assists in diagnosing bradycardia or tachycardia
• Arrhythmias
• The history of previous heart attacks
• The damage done to the heart during a heart attack.
• The structural changes of the heart, like heart enlargement, reduced blood flow to the heart, heart defects, and other problems.
• The amount of blood and oxygen supply to the heart.

Range of ECG test report

The normal range of ECG tests is different for both women and men. The following are the details of the ranges.

• The heart rate can be 55 to 108 bpm, in women, from 49 to 100 bpm in men. 
• The P wave duration can be 84 to 130 ms vs.  81 to 130 ms.
• PR interval can be 120 to 202 ms in women and 119 to 210 ms in men.
• The QRS duration can be between 74 to 110 ms. 

When should I know the results of this Test?

It depends on where you get your test done. Mostly, the reports are compiled within an hour or a few hours. It can be anywhere from a few hours to a day.
