Purpose of the Serum Galactomannan (AKU) Test

Aspergillus Galactomannan Antigen (AGA) is a type of antigen released by the Aspergillus fungus, which can cause invasive aspergillosis, a potentially life-threatening infection in individuals with weakened immune systems. Testing for AGA in serum can help diagnose and monitor the progression of the infection

When this Serum Galactomannan (AKU) test is required

The test is typically requested by an infectious disease specialist or other healthcare provider managing the care of an immunocompromised individual with suspected or confirmed Aspergillus infection.

What the Serum Galactomannan (AKU) Test Detects

The test detects the presence of AGA in the blood, which is an indication of Aspergillus infection.

Preparation for the Serum Galactomannan (AKU) Test

No special preparation is usually required for the test.

Sample Requirements

The sample required for the test is a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm.

Additional Notes

It’s important to note that a positive AGA test result does not necessarily mean that an individual has invasive aspergillosis, as AGA can also be present in individuals with non-invasive Aspergillus infections or who have been exposed to the fungus without developing an infection.
