What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs due to uncontrolled growth of cell in the breast. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be felt as a lump. The tumor can be malignant if the cells can grow into surrounding tissues and can spread to distant areas of the body.
Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms
It is important to know what is normal for you, so that you can detect any changes because only early detection of breast cancer gives you a chance of successful treatment.
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a lump or mass. If the mass is painless and has irregular edges then it is more likely to be cancer. They can be painful too at times only.. For this reason, it is important to get it checked by an oncologist.
Other symptoms of breast cancer may include:
Breast or nipple pain.
Nipple retraction (turning inward).
Nipple discharge (other than breast milk).
Skin irritation or dimpling.
Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt).
Redness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin.

Sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Swollen lymph nodes should also be checked by a health care provider.
Researchers have found that lifestyle, hormonal and environmental factors may increase your risk of breast cancer. It’s likely that breast cancer is caused by a complex interaction of your genetic makeup and your environment.
Inherited breast cancer
According to an estimation about 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are linked to gene mutations passed through generations of a family.
The most common inherited mutated genes that can increase the likelihood of breast cancer are breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2). They both significantly increase the risk of both breast and ovarian cancer. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer or other cancers, your doctor may recommend a blood test to identify specific mutations in BRCA or other genes that are being passed through your family.
There are various factors that are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer include
Inherited genes that increase cancer risk
Family history of breast cancer
Beginning your period at a younger age
A personal history of breast cancer
Beginning menopause at an older age
Having your first child at an older age
Postmenopausal hormone therapy
Having never been pregnant
